Next-Gen Acura RDX Enters the Hybrid Era
Acura has officially signaled the start of development for the fourth-generation RDX, confirming that the newcomer will feature the brand’s first-ever dual-motor hybrid powertrain. This is a milestone step in Honda's luxury brand strategy, aiming to provide customers with a diverse choice of gasoline-powered, hybrid, and fully electric vehicles. To clear the path for this new era, Acura will halt production of the current 2026 model at its Ohio plant in the first half of this year, preparing the facility for the arrival of the successor over the next couple of years.
The RDX has been one of the brand's most popular models for nearly two decades, making it the perfect candidate to debut Acura's new two-motor hybrid-electric system. While exact technical specifications remain under wraps, Acura promises that the new powertrain will blend the brand’s signature performance with the fuel efficiency increasingly demanded by today's premium-segment customers.
The history of the RDX is defined by bold engineering decisions. The first generation, debuting in 2007, marked Acura’s first foray into turbocharged engines and the legendary Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) torque-vectoring system in North America. The second generation shifted toward a more refined V6 engine, emphasizing comfort and luxury, while the third generation (arriving in 2019) returned to turbocharging with a focus on driving pleasure and advanced driver-assist systems. With approximately 850,000 units sold in North America, the RDX remains a bedrock of the Acura SUV lineup.
The arrival of the fourth generation represents a turning point where sportiness and environmental sustainability must find common ground. The hybrid RDX is not merely a response to market trends, but an attempt to prove that electrification does not mean compromising on the "Precision Crafted Performance" philosophy. Arriving in dealerships within the next few years, likely as a 2028 model, the fourth generation will serve as the bridge between Acura’s rich tradition and its all-electric future.
