Mercedes-Maybach GLS Gains 450 kW V8 and a Quieter Cabin

Mercedes-Maybach has updated the GLS 680 luxury SUV with a more powerful V8, the latest generation of MBUX, predictive air suspension and additional comfort features for rear-seat passengers. European WLTP fuel consumption is rated at 13.3–13.7 L/100 km.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS is the most luxurious version of Mercedes-Benz’s full-size GLS, with a strong emphasis on rear-seat comfort, refinement and acoustic isolation. The latest update focuses primarily on the powertrain, suspension, sound insulation and digital technology.

V8 Gets More Power

The 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged M177 EVO V8 produces 450 kW and 850 Nm. A second-generation 48-volt integrated starter-generator, known as ISG 2.0, can provide an additional 17 kW of boost for short periods.

The 48-volt system also supports energy recuperation, coasting and a smoother start-stop function. Mercedes-Benz has added two Lanchester balance shafts to further reduce vibration, an important consideration in a Maybach where refinement is a priority.

Official WLTP fuel consumption is 13.3–13.7 L/100 km, with CO₂ emissions of 304–312 g/km. The mild-hybrid assistance is therefore aimed primarily at smoother power delivery, quicker response and recuperation rather than dramatically reducing fuel consumption.

Suspension Prepares for Bumps in Advance

The standard AIRMATIC air suspension uses real-time Car-to-X information from Mercedes-Benz vehicles travelling ahead via the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. This allows the system to anticipate changes in the road surface and adjust the damping before the GLS reaches them.

The optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL system uses more than 20 sensors and five multi-core processors to analyse and react to driving conditions up to 1,000 times per second. It controls the spring and damping forces individually at each wheel. In CURVE mode, the body can lean into a bend by up to three degrees, reducing the lateral forces felt by occupants.

Rear Seats Now Massage the Calves

The new MBUX Superscreen combines three 12.3-inch (31.2 cm) displays beneath a single continuous glass surface. Rear passengers get two 11.6-inch (29.5 cm) full-HD displays and Executive Seats whose massage function now extends to the calves for the first time in a GLS. The front seats also gain a newly developed vibration massage function in their seat cushions.

The upgraded Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos now uses 15 speakers and a more powerful 710-watt amplifier. Mercedes-Benz has also added further insulation around the transmission tunnel and engine bulkhead, along with acoustic foam in selected bodyshell cavities.

Outside, the revised GLS 680 is distinguished by its illuminated Maybach-specific radiator grille, updated lighting and new wheel designs. The 23-inch forged wheels feature a centre-mounted Mercedes-Benz star on a precision ball-bearing mechanism that uses gravity to keep the emblem upright as the wheel rotates.

Europe Still Waiting for the Most Advanced Driver Assistance

In Europe, MB.DRIVE Standard is fitted as standard and includes DISTRONIC Distance Assist. MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO, an SAE Level 2 system capable of assisting with point-to-point driving in urban traffic, launches first in China and is scheduled to follow in the United States later in 2026. Mercedes-Benz has not announced a European launch date.

The most important part of the Maybach update is therefore not simply the stronger V8. Mercedes-Benz has concentrated on the qualities that matter most in a flagship luxury SUV: quietness, ride comfort, rear-seat wellbeing and smooth, effortless power delivery.
