Nissan Aura Nismo RS Takes the Stage in Tokyo
Nissan has decided to dust off its Nismo division, rolling out the Aura Nismo RS—essentially a caffeine-fueled version of the standard Note Aura. While officially still a prototype, the Japanese automaker isn't holding back, promising that this technical experiment could reach series production very soon. However, this aggressive move wasn't born purely out of a passion for motorsport; Nissan’s domestic sales plummeted to a thirty-year low last year, making every new model feel like a desperate lifeline for a drowning man.
Instead of merely slapping on some new decals, Nissan crammed the three-motor e-Power system borrowed from the X-Trail into this small hatchback. The result is an all-wheel-drive hybrid where a 204-horsepower motor on the front axle and 136 horsepower at the rear attempt to catapult the car forward, all while a gasoline engine hums loudly in the background to generate electricity. All this extra hardware has added an extra 100 kilograms of weight, which Nissan tried to offset with beefier brakes and a suspension lowered by 20 mm. To ensure the car actually looks fast, the track was widened by a staggering 145 mm, topped off with a massive wing to provide the kind of stability a city car rarely, if ever, needs.
Nissan is presenting the Aura Nismo RS as a technical litmus test to see if the brand can still produce anything that evokes genuine emotion. If all goes according to plan, this wide-bodied, spoiler-clad hybrid could hit both the track and the streets. Whether this is enough to push Nissan’s sales figures back into the black, or if it will remain just another somber chapter in the company's history, remains to be seen. For now, it’s clear the Japanese are hell-bent on proving that even an economy hybrid can bite if you dress it in enough sportswear.
