Peugeot 208 and 2008 get a new Turbo 100 petrol engine
Peugeot is giving the 208 and 2008 a new Turbo 100 petrol engine, arriving in the 208 this March and in the 2008 in May 2026. It is a 1.2 litre three cylinder turbo unit producing 74 kW, or 101 bhp, and 205 Nm. Peugeot says the new engine brings better efficiency, stronger reliability and longer service intervals.
What changes with the new engine
According to Peugeot, around 70 per cent of the Turbo 100 consists of new components. The list of updates includes the timing chain, turbocharger, injection system, pistons and cylinder block. The company also highlights a variable geometry turbocharger, 350 bar direct injection and the Miller cycle, all intended to improve combustion efficiency.
On the reliability front, Peugeot puts particular emphasis on the switch to a timing chain, along with the new block, pistons and rings, which are meant to reduce oil consumption and improve durability. During development, the engine logged more than 30,000 hours on the test bench, while prototypes covered over 3 million kilometres in total.
Service intervals get longer
The new engine also brings a longer service interval for the 208 and 2008. Peugeot says servicing is now due every two years or 25,000 kilometres. Previously, the schedule called for maintenance every year or 20,000 kilometres, with an additional annual inspection still remaining in place. In some markets, these models will also qualify for the Peugeot Care programme, which covers up to eight years or 160,000 kilometres.
Peugeot is clearly not ready to give up on petrol power in its smaller models, even as most launch presentations now fill up with talk of electric and hybrid futures. At the same time, the timing chain, the longer service interval and the heavy emphasis on durability suggest the company is trying to sell more than economy in this class. It is trying to sell trust as well. A small engine, then, with quite a large job to do.
