Renault Filante: A French Name, Chinese Genes, and Korean Ambitions
Renault has pulled back the curtain on its latest large SUV, the Filante, another striking example of the increasingly tangled bloodlines in the automotive industry. Although the French diamond sits proudly on the nose, the vehicle conceals a Geely CMA platform and Chinese technology, targeted primarily at the South Korean market. For Europeans, this model will likely remain a digital curiosity; the Filante is being tailor-made at the Busan plant to conquer the roads of Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where the demand for large, prestigious vehicles shows no signs of slowing down.
In terms of design, the Filante is a somewhat extravagant blend of an SUV and a traditional sedan, attempting to stand out from the crowd with its elongated silhouette and massive rear. Renault designers have outfitted the front end with entirely new lighting technology and a radiator grille featuring a pattern that echoes the brand’s logo, emphasizing the vehicle's premium ambitions in the E-segment. With a length of nearly five meters and a luggage capacity exceeding two cubic meters with the seats down, the Filante promises class-leading interior space while maintaining a rugged 201-millimeter ground clearance and wheels up to 20 inches.
Under the hood sits a hybrid system that combines a 1.5-liter internal combustion engine with two electric motors, delivering a total output of 250 horsepower. Renault engineers claim that in urban environments, the machine can spend up to 75% of its time without bothering the gasoline engine, saving both fuel and the owner’s nerves. Power is managed by a three-speed automatic transmission, an unusual choice in today's automotive world, but one that should, in theory, ensure seamless cooperation between the different power sources.
The interior spares no expense on technology: the dashboard features no fewer than three 12.3-inch screens, creating a digital living room atmosphere for the passengers. Alongside three-zone climate control and a Bose sound system, the Filante is equipped with a digital rearview mirror and next-generation driver aids, including an emergency steering assist function. It appears Renault has assembled a package that is perhaps too luxurious and oversized for Europe’s narrow streets and strict emissions standards, finding its true home where size and screen count remain the ultimate status symbols.
