Rare and historically significant automobiles always capture the attention of collectors, and the latest auction has set a new record. The 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen, an iconic Grand Prix racing car, has been sold in an exclusive single-car auction for €51,155,000 ($53,917,370). This makes it the most valuable Grand Prix racing car ever auctioned.

The history of this car is as fascinating as its engineering. Originally donated by Daimler-Benz AG to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 1965, the W 196 R remained on display for decades as a celebrated piece of motorsport heritage. Now, after an intense bidding war involving phone and in-person bidders from around the world, the car has found a new owner.

The Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows hold a unique place in motorsport history, revered for their groundbreaking technology and exceptional speed. The W 196 R was developed to comply with the new 1954 Formula 1 regulations, which introduced a 2.5-liter engine displacement limit. The car quickly became dominant, securing victories under the guidance of legendary drivers Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss.

Notably, this auction took place in the same venue where, in 2022, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR "Uhlenhaut Coupé" was sold for an astonishing €135 million, making it the most expensive car ever auctioned. This latest sale reaffirms Mercedes-Benz’s position at the pinnacle of the collector car market, with its legendary racing machines continuing to command record-breaking prices.
