Thomas Ingenlath Returns as Volvo Chief Design Officer: Veteran Retakes the Reins of Brand Identity
Volvo Cars decided to summon the old guard at the start of the new year, announcing the return of Thomas Ingenlath to the position of Chief Design Officer. Stepping back into his role leading Volvo’s global design team this February, Ingenlath is hardly a fresh face; rather, he is the man tasked with restoring a visual identity that some might say has begun to fade. The move reaffirms the automaker’s ambition to cling to its signature Scandinavian aesthetic while simultaneously pushing through the inevitable transition to full electrification.
Upon his appointment, Ingenlath took the opportunity to note that design remains the cornerstone of Volvo’s essence, expressing a routine readiness to develop vehicles that stay true to the brand’s heritage. His previous tenure as Senior Vice President of Design provided him with the necessary credentials to have shaped the contemporary look associated with Volvo today. In the intervening years, he served as the CEO of Polestar, where he attempted to prove that electric performance and progressive design could hold their ground in an increasingly crowded market.
Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson was not shy with his praise, noting that design remains one of their primary advantages in the premium electric vehicle sector. According to Samuelsson, Ingenlath’s wealth of experience should ensure that the company’s output continues to reflect the values global customers expect. Meanwhile, the company did not miss the chance to thank Nicholas Gronenthal, who filled the design lead role on an interim basis and is now being moved to head Volvo’s American design division, effectively clearing the path for the returning veteran.
