Google Gemini turns Mazda CX-5 voice control into a natural conversation
Mazda has introduced Google Gemini AI in the new-generation CX-5, allowing drivers to control vehicle functions and search for information using natural language. Replacing Google Assistant, the system understands conversational context, answers follow-up questions and can draft and translate messages. In Europe, Gemini initially supports 12 language options, but Estonian is not among them.
The car now understands more complex questions
Gemini will arrive in CX-5 models equipped with Google built-in through an over-the-air software update. Unlike previous voice assistants, the new system does not require users to memorise specific commands.
A driver can, for example, ask it to find a highly rated café along the route with an outdoor terrace. Gemini takes location, route and user preferences into account and allows the search to be refined with follow-up questions.
Similar conversational control is available for selecting music and operating selected vehicle functions. The system supports Spotify, YouTube Music and Amazon Music. Apple Music remains available through Apple CarPlay.
Gemini can also read incoming messages aloud and summarise them. Drivers can ask the AI to draft a reply, change the wording or translate the text into another language. This reduces the need to touch a phone or the central display while driving.
Software update adds new capabilities
To use Gemini, drivers must sign in with a Google account and activate the new assistant themselves. Not all functions work without an internet connection, and service availability depends on the country and language.
The update is enabled by Mazda's new E/E Architecture+ electronic architecture, which is designed to allow the vehicle's digital functions to be developed after sale.
This marks a significant change for Mazda. Whereas a car's capabilities were previously determined largely by the equipment fitted at the factory, the manufacturer can now improve the user experience through software.
Google Gemini is not exclusive to Mazda, however. The same technology will also come to models from other carmakers using Google built-in. Its competitive advantage will therefore depend on how well Mazda can integrate voice control with the car's own functions.
Some European languages are not supported
In Europe, Gemini supports English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Slovenian, Swedish and Turkish.
Estonian is not included in the initial selection. CX-5 owners who want to take full advantage of the new voice-control capabilities will therefore need to use one of the supported languages.
Mazda has not announced when the language selection might expand.
The technology's greatest value lies in ease of use. Voice control that understands more complex requests and can sustain a conversation may reduce the driver's need to navigate on-screen menus. Its practical benefit, however, depends on speech-recognition accuracy and how reliably Gemini carries out the requested actions.
