Nelson Racing Engines extracts 883 kW from a 7-litre V8 on pump gasoline

US company Nelson Racing Engines has launched the Twin-Turbo Intercooled Outlaw 427 engine, which produces 1,200 hp, or 883 kW, on ordinary pump gasoline. With racing fuel, the 7.0-litre V8’s output rises to 1,500 hp, or 1,103 kW.
This is a complete engine that NRE builds primarily for high-output project and race cars. Prices start at $41,999.
7 litres and two turbos
The Outlaw 427 is based on General Motors’ LS engine family. Its 427-cubic-inch displacement equates to approximately 7.0 litres in European measurements.
NRE uses a reinforced aluminium block with cast-iron cylinder liners and six-bolt cylinder heads. Inside, the engine features a strengthened crankshaft, forged connecting rods, custom pistons and a special camshaft.
The compression ratio is a modest 9.0:1, as is appropriate for a turbocharged engine. Boost is supplied by two NRE Mirror Image Generation 2 turbochargers.
883 kW on ordinary pump fuel
The most remarkable aspect is the fuel. NRE claims 1,200 hp, or 883 kW, at 7,200 rpm using US 91 AKI gasoline. On the European RON scale, this equates to approximately 95–96 octane.
With higher-octane racing fuel, output rises to 1,500 hp, or 1,103 kW.
That equates to around 126 kW per litre of displacement on ordinary pump gasoline. With racing fuel, specific output rises to around 158 kW per litre, which is already a fairly absurd figure for a 7-litre V8.
Not cheap, but surprisingly reasonable in the world of 883 kW
The Outlaw 427 starts at $41,999. NRE builds every engine to order and tests it on a dyno before delivery.
In Europe, getting a road car with such a powertrain approved for road use would be difficult because of emissions, noise and modification requirements. In the world of American project and race cars, however, the Outlaw 427 is a fairly typical example of how far the familiar LS architecture can be taken.
A 1,200 hp engine is no longer exceptional today. What is more interesting is achieving 883 kW from a 7-litre V8 on ordinary pump gasoline and selling the engine as a ready-made package.
A European manufacturer would build an entire hybrid system around this kind of output. Nelson Racing Engines adds two turbos and turns on the tap.
