What to consider when buying the sixth-generation Renault Clio E-Tech 160 hybrid

The sixth-generation Renault Clio E-Tech 160 is a far more technically interesting car than the modest term “self-charging hybrid” suggests. It is quick, reasonably economical in town and equipped more like a small family car, but when buying a Clio costing nearly €29,000, it is worth looking beyond the 3.9 l/100 km WLTP fuel-consumption figure before signing. The new powertrain, small boot and 18-inch wheels make certain questions more important than usual.

The sixth-generation Clio arrived on the market at the beginning of 2026, and the hybrid version is not simply a slightly more powerful evolution of the previous Clio E-Tech 145. Renault replaced the existing 1.6-litre petrol engine with a new 1.8-litre unit, increased the traction-battery capacity and refined its distinctive clutchless multi-mode gearbox. The result is 160 hp, 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds and WLTP fuel consumption of 3.9-4.1 l/100 km.

All of that sounds convincing. From a buyer’s perspective, however, it is at least as important to understand where the hybrid delivers its advantage and where it does not.

This is not the old E-Tech 145 in a new body

The Clio E-Tech 160’s combustion engine is a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol unit. It operates on the efficiency-focused Atkinson cycle, uses 350-bar direct injection and produces 109 hp and 172 Nm on its own. Alongside it is a 36 kW, or approximately 49 hp, electric motor, supplemented by a 15 kW starter-generator. Everything is powered by a 1.4 kWh battery.

There is no conventional clutch. The combustion engine has four ratios and the main electric motor has two, while the system can combine them in 15 different ways. The car decides for itself when it runs on electric power, petrol power, both at once, or uses the petrol engine to generate electricity.

In practice, this means the Clio does not behave quite like a conventional petrol car with an automatic gearbox, nor like a Toyota-style hybrid with a planetary gearset. Most of the time, the system operates very smoothly, but engine speed and vehicle speed may not be intuitively linked. Under harder acceleration, the petrol engine can become quite audible, and in some situations the powertrain takes a moment to find the appropriate combination. On test drives, however, the new system has been judged noticeably smoother and more responsive than the previous E-Tech 145 setup.

It is therefore worth taking a longer test drive before buying, rather than limiting it to ten minutes around the dealership. Try calm urban driving, 70-100 km/h overtaking acceleration and motorway driving.

The Clio hybrid is very strong in town

The E-Tech 160 makes most sense in urban use. Renault claims that, in favourable conditions, the car can be driven by its electric motor for up to 80 per cent of the time in towns and on suburban roads. The important word is time, not kilometres covered. This is not a plug-in hybrid, and the 1.4 kWh battery does not enable dozens of consecutive electric-only kilometres.

Real-world tests nevertheless confirm that fuel consumption can be exceptionally low. On tests, actual consumption on a typical road route was around 4.3 l/100 km. One suburban journey returned 3.9 l/100 km, while longer urban use came in at around five litres. In other tests, the overall average has been roughly 4.5-5.2 litres.

So 3.9 l/100 km is not some laboratory absurdity, but it should not be taken as a universal promise.

Winter changes the picture

The most important question depends on how the car is used. If each day consists of three-kilometre trips from home to work and back, the hybrid may not work miracles at all.

With a cold engine, the petrol engine must run to warm itself, the catalytic converter and the cabin, while maintaining a suitable state of charge in the small hybrid battery. In one test involving very short journeys with a cold engine, fuel consumption reached around nine litres per 100 km. This is not a Clio-specific fault, but a consequence of how a hybrid operates. Once journeys become longer, the system can make much better use of its fuel-saving potential.

The claimed 3.9 litres should therefore be seen as a figure for favourable conditions. In summer, on urban journeys of 10-30 km, it may genuinely be possible to get quite close to it. Driving three kilometres at a time in January certainly will not.

The hybrid’s advantage also diminishes on the motorway. In one 1,200 km long-term test, 4.3 l/100 km was recorded on normal roads, but 6.3 l/100 km on the motorway. If the car spends most of its life on roads at 100-120 km/h, the hybrid’s economic advantage is nowhere near as great as it is in town.

The hybrid also comes with more expensive equipment

This is one of the most important nuances in the buying decision. According to Renault’s price list, the Clio Techno TCe 115 EDC automatic costs approximately €24,000, while the E-Tech 160 hybrid is offered only in esprit Alpine trim at €28,500. The price difference is therefore around €4,500.

However, that sum cannot simply be described as the hybrid premium. Esprit Alpine includes more equipment than Techno, so part of the price difference buys seats, design details, driver-assistance systems and other comforts rather than the powertrain.

Looking purely at fuel consumption, the hybrid’s WLTP advantage over the automatic TCe 115 is around 1.2 litres per 100 km: the E-Tech 160’s official figure is 3.9-4.1 l/100 km, compared with 5.1-5.3 l/100 km for the TCe 115 EDC.

It is therefore not worth buying the hybrid on the assumption that the higher purchase price will be recovered through petrol savings in a couple of years. With low annual mileage and extensive motorway driving, it probably never will be. But if mileage is high and a significant part of it is accumulated in town, the calculation shifts in the hybrid’s favour.

18-inch wheels look good, but come at a cost

Esprit Alpine trim comes as standard with 18-inch alloy wheels. They look striking on the Clio, but are not necessarily the most rational solution for a small hybrid car.

A lower-profile 18-inch tyre usually means more expensive sets of summer and winter tyres, a greater risk of damage from potholes and a slightly firmer ride than with 16-inch wheels. Large wheels are not beneficial for fuel consumption either. For example, lower hybrid trim levels are also offered in France with 16-inch wheels, while the E-Tech is currently tied specifically to esprit Alpine in Estonia.

If the car is being bought for ten years, this detail should not be underestimated. Several sets of tyres will be needed during that period.

The boot is one of the hybrid’s biggest compromises

From the outside, the new Clio is clearly larger than its predecessor: it is 4.12 metres long and has a 2.59-metre wheelbase. Unfortunately, the larger body does not translate into a proportionately larger cabin.

The difference is even clearer in the boot. The petrol-powered Clio has up to 391 litres of boot space, but the hybrid has around 309 litres remaining due to the placement of the battery and hybrid system.

On paper, 82 litres is not an insignificant difference. With a pushchair, a larger suitcase or travel luggage for several people, it quickly becomes a practical issue. When buying it as a family car, it is therefore worth bringing your usual luggage to the test drive rather than judging the available space by eye alone.

The rear seat is perfectly usable for the B-segment, but you might expect even more from a 4.12-metre body. The sixth-generation Clio grew more on the outside than inside.

Winter equipment is not automatically included for nearly €29,000

Another detail that is easy to miss without studying the price list: heated front seats and a heated steering wheel for the esprit Alpine hybrid are included in the €330 Winter Premium package. They are not simply included in the car’s base price.

In a Nordic climate, this package is effectively essential. When ordering a new car, it is also worth checking on the spare wheel, as a tyre repair kit is standard equipment and the spare wheel is a separate option.

These are small sums compared with the car’s price, but with a small car costing nearly €30,000, it makes sense to go through the equipment list line by line before ordering.

Google's system is good, but connectivity is not permanent

One of the Clio’s strongest points is the new OpenR Link. Two 10-inch screens, Google Maps, Google Assistant and apps make the system considerably more modern than those of many rivals in the same price bracket.

However, it is worth reading the small print. According to the price list, the car includes connectivity for three years. An extension to five years costs €110 on the price list, while eight years costs €210.

This does not mean the screen goes dark after three years, but buyers should ask the seller exactly which online and Google services are included in the car’s price, how long they operate free of charge and which functions change after the service period ends.

When buying a modern car, this is as important as the cost of updating a navigation map once was.

It is still too early to draw firm conclusions on reliability

Particular caution is needed here. The sixth-generation Clio has only been in customers’ hands since the beginning of 2026. Neither Renault, the motoring media nor owners yet know what its reliability will be like over ten years.

The powertrain’s general architecture is not new to Renault, but the 1.8-litre engine, larger battery and new system control logic are fresh. Renault itself emphasises that the clutchless gearbox contains fewer friction components than a conventional setup and should therefore be mechanically simple. The battery pack is covered by an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty.

However, early owner experiences have included software quirks. Renault's own user community has described intermittent radio and multimedia operation, an engine running at unusually high revs, and situations in which the hybrid system did not behave as expected. In at least one such case, the issue disappeared after a software update. A small number of owners have also complained about a high-frequency whine from the electric drive.

These reports do not prove a model-wide reliability issue. A few forum posts are not statistics. Rather, they show what must always be considered during the first production year of an entirely new model: some teething troubles are only resolved after cars reach customers.

If buying a 2026 car as a demonstrator or lightly used vehicle, it is worth asking the dealer, using the VIN, whether all software updates and any factory campaigns have been completed.

The test drive should be done with a completely cold car

For the E-Tech 160, a cold start would provide more information than a dealership demonstrator that has already been driven for an hour.

Pay attention to how the petrol engine starts, how long it runs at high revs when cold, how smoothly the electric and petrol modes alternate, and whether there is any jerking at low speeds. You should also listen to the electric motor and powertrain with both the windows closed and open.

Under hard acceleration, the petrol engine may be audible, and that is normal for this powertrain. Persistent loud droning, vibration, warnings or very abrupt powertrain responses are not things that should simply be dismissed as “hybrid characteristics” in a new car.

The infotainment system should also be tested. Connect a phone, use wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, and try Google Maps, the radio, reversing camera and all driver-assistance systems. In a car rich in electronics, the user experience is as important as the condition of the engine.

The Clio received four stars for safety

The new Clio received four stars in Euro NCAP’s 2025 test. Adult occupant protection was rated at 79 per cent, child occupant protection at 82 per cent, vulnerable road user protection at 80 per cent and safety assist at 73 per cent.

The result is not bad, but four rather than five stars is worth knowing about for a car costing nearly €30,000. Euro NCAP identified weak protection for the driver’s chest and marginal protection for the front passenger’s chest in a frontal impact; in the standard side-impact test, however, the Clio received maximum points.

The equipment picture is much better. Esprit Alpine includes, among other features, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, front and side parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic braking when reversing.

Who does the E-Tech 160 actually suit?

The Clio hybrid makes the most sense for a buyer who drives extensively in towns and on suburban roads, wants an automatic gearbox and does not want to charge an electric car. In this type of use, Renault's hybrid system works very well: the electric motor handles much of the low-speed driving, braking energy returns to the battery and the petrol engine can operate in conditions where its efficiency is better.

The E-Tech 160 is also noticeably quicker than a regular Clio. A 0-100 km/h time of 8.3 seconds means this is no longer just an economy version. There is enough power for overtaking and motorway acceleration.

However, if mileage is low, trips are very short or most kilometres are covered on the motorway, it is worth giving serious consideration to the TCe 115 EDC as well. It costs less, has a larger boot and a simpler powertrain. The hybrid’s 160 hp does not automatically make it the better buy.

The biggest mistake would be to buy the E-Tech solely because of the 3.9 l/100 km figure.

In summary: a very good hybrid, but not automatically the most sensible Clio

The sixth-generation Clio E-Tech 160’s strengths are quite clear. Its hybrid system is more powerful and more refined than before, urban fuel consumption can genuinely approach four litres, the car is quick and esprit Alpine trim is generously equipped. Its 39-litre tank can also deliver a genuinely long range between fill-ups.

The compromises are equally clear. In many markets, the hybrid is currently available only in the expensive esprit Alpine version. The 18-inch wheels mean higher tyre costs, the boot loses more than 80 litres compared with the petrol version, and very short winter trips can quickly turn the official fuel-consumption figure into an illusion. In addition, the model is so new that nothing conclusive can yet be said about long-term reliability.

The E-Tech 160 is therefore a good choice primarily for someone whose driving profile suits a hybrid. If a substantial annual mileage is covered and much of it is in town, the Clio is one of the most interesting small full hybrids on the market. If the car will mainly travel from one town to another and back, or spend its life on five-minute cold starts, the same route should also be tried in the cheaper TCe 115 EDC before spending €28,590.

With the Clio hybrid, the question is not so much whether the technology works. It does. The question is whether the buyer will use the car in a way that allows the benefits of its fairly complex technology to genuinely come through.
