Volkswagen recalls 1109 new ID. Polos in Europe
Volkswagen is recalling 1109 new electric ID. Polos because the front passenger seat belt may have been incorrectly installed at its B-pillar mounting point. If faulty, the seat belt could provide significantly less protection in a collision or under heavy braking.
Issue affects recently built cars
The recall covers ID. Polos built from 21 July to 2 September 2026. The campaign affects 340 cars in Germany and 1109 vehicles worldwide.
Volkswagen began series production of the ID. Polo at the Martorell plant in Spain in June. The recall therefore affects cars from a very early stage of the model’s production.
Seat belt mounting needs inspection
According to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, KBA, the front passenger seat belt may not be properly secured at its B-pillar mounting point. In that case, the seat belt may fail to fulfil its primary function in a crash.
A Volkswagen dealer will check the mounting and replace the seat belt if necessary. The factory code for the recall is 69G1 and the KBA reference number is 17099R.
An awkward start for the new model
The ID. Polo is Volkswagen’s new small electric car based on the MEB+ platform and an important model for the brand in Europe. The entry-level version uses a 37 kWh battery, with power starting at 85 kW and a WLTP range of up to 334 km. Versions with a larger battery and a more powerful powertrain can travel up to 454 km on a single charge.
The recall does not indicate a design flaw in the ID. Polo, but rather an assembly quality issue affecting a limited production period. It is nevertheless awkward for Volkswagen at the start of the model’s market launch, as the seat belt mounting is part of one of the car’s most fundamental safety systems.
