Kia introduces seamless EV charging technology Plug&Charge

Kia is introducing Plug&Charge technology to its electric vehicles in Europe, starting with the EV9 model and extending to future electrified Kia models. This innovative charging solution eliminates the need for additional identification steps when connecting to public charging stations, as the authentication process is fully automated. This technology streamlines and enhances the charging experience for Kia customers.

Plug&Charge functions as an integrated identification method within the vehicle, enabling seamless communication with compatible charging stations. Users can initiate the charging process simply by connecting their vehicle to the charging station, eliminating the need for manual verification steps. Historically, customers were required to confirm their account at the charging point using methods such as RFID cards or mobile apps like Kia Charge.

The security of the Plug&Charge service is ensured through an automated exchange of digital certificates between the car and the charger. This process verifies the customer’s account and associated charging contract through the driver’s Kia Charge account. The Hubject Plug&Charge ecosystem facilitates this certificate exchange among stakeholders, including charging point operators, mobility operators, and original equipment manufacturers, following the ISO 15118 international standard.

Plug&Charge not only streamlines the charging process but also complements the features of the Kia Charge app. The app provides navigation assistance, real-time updates on charging fees and station availability, and filter options for plug type, charging speed, and access type. This ensures that electric vehicle drivers receive prompt information about the available public charging infrastructure. Upon completion of the charging process, customers can disconnect their vehicle and drive away, with the payment seamlessly added to their monthly bill in accordance with their contract terms. Kia’s adoption of Plug&Charge reflects its commitment to providing customers with a fast, secure, and convenient charging experience.
