Volkswagen Supports Vatican City's Sustainable Mobility Transition
Volkswagen has joined forces with the Vatican City State (VCS) to accelerate its shift towards sustainable mobility. In early 2024, Volkswagen will deliver nearly 40 fully electric models from its ID. family, including the ID.31, ID.4, and ID.5, to contribute to the Vatican’s ambitious decarbonization strategy. The goal is to achieve a climate-neutral Vatican fleet by the year 2030. Imelda Labbé, Member of the Board of Management for Sales, Marketing, and After-Sales at Volkswagen Passenger Cars, and Dr. Christian Dahlheim, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Financial Services AG, personally presented the first two electric vehicles, which were ID.3 Pro Performance models, to the Vatican.
The Vatican City State has demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing innovative and sustainable solutions aimed at tangibly reducing the environmental impact of human activities, thereby safeguarding the planet. At the core of this commitment is the “Ecological Conversion 2030” program, focusing on reducing the CO2 footprint of the state’s vehicle fleet. The strategy involves a gradual replacement of existing vehicles with electric counterparts, ultimately achieving a fully CO2-neutral fleet by 2030.
Volkswagen, recognized as a leader in electric mobility, has been selected as the key partner for this transformative project. Through Volkswagen Financial Services, the company will commence the supply of electric vehicles to the Vatican State at the beginning of 2024. Subsequently, additional zero-emission vehicles from various Volkswagen Group brands will be introduced in subsequent phases, ensuring a complete replacement of the entire fleet by 2030. This partnership signifies a significant step toward sustainable and environmentally conscious mobility practices within the Vatican City State.
