Increased driving range and greater efficiency for revised Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge models

Volvo just upgraded their C40 and XC40 Recharge electric whips and they’re even better than they first thought. The new performance numbers show that you can go up to 342 miles on a full charge with the C40 and 334 miles with the XC40. That’s an improvement of up to 64 miles and 24% over the old models, respectively. And the energy efficiency is better too, with up to 3.7 miles per kWh for the most efficient versions.

They did a bunch of stuff to make this happen, like switching from front to rear-wheel drive for the single-motor Recharge versions of both models and upgrading to a second-gen electric motor that’s more powerful than the old one. Battery performance is also better now thanks to better cooling.

The dual-motor C40 and XC40 Recharge Twin have even bigger batteries now with a nominal 82kWh capacity (79kWh usable), up from 78kWh (75kWh usable) in the old models. They also have different front and rear e-motors with 150hp and 258hp, respectively, instead of the old 204hp units. But the total power output is still the same at 408hp.

If you’re into speedier recharging times, the C40 and XC40 Recharge Twin all-wheel-drive models now have a maximum charging rate of 200kW instead of 150kW. That means you can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 28 minutes with a 200kW DC rapid-charging system.

So yeah, the new C40 and XC40 Recharge models are the bomb and you can order them now. The first UK deliveries are set for the second half of the year. And in case you’re wondering, here are the new numbers in metric units:

C40 Recharge: up to 478 km (previously up to 438 km) and up to 5.96 km/kWh (previously up to 5.63 km/kWh)

C40 Recharge Twin: up to 550 km (previously up to 447 km) and up to 5.63 km/kWh (previously up to 4.99 km/kWh)

XC40 Recharge: up to 467 km (previously up to 425 km) and up to 5.96 km/kWh (previously up to 5.47 km/kWh)

XC40 Recharge Twin: up to 537 km (previously up to 435 km) and up to 5.63 km/kWh (previously up to 4.83 km/kWh)
