McLaren Develops Ultra High-Speed Telemetry for Motorsports

McLaren Applied is entering into a partnership with Blu Wireless to revolutionize ultra high-speed telemetry solutions for motorsport applications. This collaboration aims to achieve breakthroughs in connectivity performance within the dynamic motorsport environment, establishing a data pipe capable of handling real-time data and video streams from racing cars.

The joint solution will integrate Blu Wireless’ mmWave technology with McLaren Applied’s motorsport gateway on-car telemetry hardware. In addition to providing systems architecture, integration, and support, McLaren Applied will leverage its understanding of motorsport requirements. The solution also incorporates McLaren Applied’s software, ensuring stable connectivity for vehicles and transportation moving at high speeds. This software, a crucial component, aggregates data across multiple networks and plays a pivotal role in applying mmWave technology for multi-gigabit connectivity across diverse race car platforms.

Over the past 12 months, the technology has undergone rigorous testing in various locations, including the UK and North America. The tests, conducted by McLaren Applied and Blu Wireless, demonstrated the technology’s prowess, showcasing its capability to maintain multiple HD video links on race cars traveling at speeds exceeding 165mph. With successful testing behind them, McLaren Applied’s world-class design and systems engineering team is now gearing up for the imminent deployment of the system in racing environments.
