SR1 XXR: the most ‘Radical’ update to its entry-level car yet
Radical Motorsport, the biggest race car maker in the UK, just announced a huge update to their entry-level car, the SR1. This is the first time they’ve made changes in six years! The SR1 has been super popular since it came out in 2012, with tons of drivers choosing it as their first step into racing a Radical. It’s perfect for people who want to take their driving to the next level with a focused, downforce-powered race car that still has two seats and semi-slick tyres (not full slicks like the SR3 and SR10).
Now, the SR1 is getting the XXR treatment, just like the SR3 and SR10. This means it’ll have similar design and engineering improvements, making it easier to use and more durable. There are also some aerodynamic design changes, like a central LMP-inspired ‘fin’ that comes standard. The SR1 XXR will have a new engine too, the Generation 5 1,340 cc power unit from Radical’s bespoke engine facility.
The new engine is more efficient, reliable, and long-lasting than ever before, thanks to a 25% increase in recommended engine refresh intervals. It’s liquid-cooled, four-cylinder, and 16-valve, with a reduced warm-up time and thermal management upgrades. This means drivers can push their cars harder and for longer on the track. The oil change intervals have also increased from six to ten hours, and there’s a new drive-by-wire induction system.
There are a bunch of other upgrades too, like improvements to the gearbox, oiling system, and cylinder head flow rate. Plus, the engine has a new ignition system and a reduction in mass for the connecting rods and crankshaft pins. All of these changes make the SR1 XXR even more responsive and drivable without sacrificing durability.
The updated SR1 XXR is available to order now through Radical Motorsport’s dealer network, with production starting later this summer. Meanwhile, production of the SR3 XXR started in February 2023, and customers are already starting to get their hands on them!
