25 years of the Polo GTI

25 years have passed since the introduction of the Polo GTI, and Volkswagen is celebrating this milestone with the launch of the special-edition Polo GTI Edition 25. It was back in 1998 when the Polo first adopted the iconic GTI designation, and now, a quarter of a century later, VW presents a limited edition of the current Polo GTI with 152 kW (207 PS) of power. While the impressive performance is a highlight, there’s more to this sporty compact car. Equipped with features like sports suspension, the electronic differential lock XDS, a comprehensive range of standard equipment, and distinctive design elements, the anniversary model is truly something special.

The Polo GTI Edition 25, limited to 2,500 units, will be available for order in Germany starting from June 1st, with a price tag of €35,205. Specific details regarding specifications and pricing for the UK market are yet to be confirmed.

Similar to its renowned counterpart, the Golf GTI, the Polo has a rich history and a lineage of sporty predecessors. Now, Volkswagen is celebrating 25 years of the Polo GTI with the special anniversary model Polo GTI Edition 25. “Volkswagen has a rich heritage, and the Polo is one of our most iconic vehicles,” says Imelda Labbé, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management for Sales, Marketing, and Aftersales. “GTI fans are very important to us, and our anniversary model is a way to celebrate this milestone together with them, commemorating 25 years of power, performance, sportiness, and fun driving in the Polo class.”

Performance and handling are key aspects of the Polo GTI Edition 25. Its powerful 2.0-litre TSI engine delivers 152 kW (207 PS) and 320 Nm of torque, propelling the front-wheel-drive Polo GTI Edition 25 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. The model comes standard with a specially tuned sports suspension, lowering the body by 15 millimetres. Combined with the electronic differential lock XDS, this setup ensures excellent driving dynamics, improved traction, and precise handling characteristic of GTI models.

The exceptional position of the Polo GTI Edition 25 is visually accentuated through its exclusive anniversary equipment. The classic GTI look is preserved with red brake calipers, trim strips, a honeycomb design on the radiator grille, and chrome-plated tailpipes. Additional features such as 18-inch Adelaide alloy wheels in Black Glossy, a black roof, and black exterior mirrors contribute to its sporty appearance. The interior boasts premium sport seats in perforated black-red leather with stitched GTI logos, along with glossy black decorative trim featuring red GTI lettering. Owners will be reminded of the exclusivity of their vehicle through the “One of 2500” logo on the sill panel trim. The Polo GTI Edition 25 is available in a range of GTI colours, including Pure White, Kings Red Metallic, Reef Blue Metallic, Smoke Grey Metallic, Deep Black Pearl Effect, and Ascot Grey.

In terms of technology, the Polo GTI Edition 25 is equipped with IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights featuring Dynamic Light Assist and LED daytime running lights for exceptional road illumination. The multifunction sports steering wheel in leather, with paddles and the “25” logo, adds a touch of sportiness. The model also offers advanced assist systems typically found in higher vehicle classes. The optional Travel Assist, part of the IQ.DRIVE assist package, enables partially automated driving. Travel Assist can take over steering, braking, and acceleration at speeds ranging from 0 km/h up to the system’s limit of 210 km/h. It utilizes familiar systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Assist (standard) for longitudinal and lateral guidance, respectively.

The instruments and Infotainment system in the Polo GTI Edition 25 are thoughtfully arranged on one visual axis, ensuring easy visibility and operation. The standard Infotainment system, Ready2Discover, features a high-resolution 20-centimetre (8-inch) display, offering state-of-the-art connectivity. Two additional systems are available as optional features.
