Level 3 automated driving available in the new BMW 7 Series from next spring
BMW is set to introduce Level 3 highly automated driving capabilities in its new 7 Series, providing drivers the option to momentarily disengage from steering and divert their attention while the car takes control in specific situations. Named BMW Personal Pilot L3, this feature manages the vehicle’s speed, distance to the vehicle ahead, and lane positioning under certain conditions. Interested customers can order this option for the new BMW 7 Series (excluding the i7 eDrive50 and i7 M70 xDrive) starting December, with installations scheduled from March onward.
Priced at 6,000 euros (including VAT), the Level 3 capability adheres to the standards defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), taking over the entire driving task in certain scenarios. The technology enables drivers to focus on other in-vehicle activities when traveling at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph) on motorways with structurally separated lanes. Notably, the system’s sophisticated sensors make it the first of its kind usable in low-light conditions.
BMW’s introduction of Level 3 functionality in the 7 Series establishes the company as the first automaker offering both advanced Level 2 driving capabilities, where hands can be temporarily off the steering wheel, and a Level 3 system. The existing BMW Highway Assistant already incorporates an innovative SAE Level 2 partially automated driving function in all new BMW 5 Series models, featuring the Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation for long-distance journeys.
The key distinction between Level 2 and Level 3 lies in the level of driver responsibility. While Level 2 requires continuous driver monitoring and intervention, Level 3 allows drivers to engage in secondary in-vehicle activities when the BMW Personal Pilot L3 is activated. The system permits tasks such as editing emails or participating in phone calls at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), offering a practical solution for utilizing time during slow-moving traffic or daily motorway commutes.
Symbols on the display behind the steering wheel indicate the availability of BMW Personal Pilot L3, which can be activated or deactivated using a button on the steering wheel. Despite the system’s use, drivers must be ready to resume control at any time, with visual and acoustic signals prompting them to do so. Failure to respond appropriately results in the vehicle coming to a controlled stop.
Technologically, the BMW Personal Pilot L3 relies on a live HD map, precise GPS location-finding, 360° sensors, a new software stack, a powerful computing platform, and a 5G link to the BMW Cloud. Additionally, the system incorporates ultrasonic sensors, radar sensors, and a highly sensitive 3D lidar sensor for monitoring the vehicle’s surroundings and road conditions. These technological advancements ensure the reliable performance of BMW Personal Pilot L3, even in low-light conditions, setting it apart from competitors. The implementation of SAE Level 3 automated driving aims to enhance both comfort and safety on public roads.
