Honda preparing giant hybrid SUV larger than the Pilot
Honda is preparing a new large hybrid model for North America, powered by a V6 petrol engine. Unofficial reports suggest the future SUV could be around 200 mm longer than the current Pilot, taking Honda into the class of genuinely large US SUVs for the first time.
Honda has not disclosed the new model’s name or dimensions. According to Automotive News sources, the manufacturer would position it above the Pilot, with the vehicle due to reach the market at the start of the next decade.
The current US Honda Pilot is already 5.08 metres long. If the claim of roughly 200 mm of additional length proves accurate, the new model would grow to around 5.3 metres. By European standards, that is no longer simply a large family car, but a vehicle approaching the territory of the Chevrolet Tahoe and other American full-size SUVs.
The V6 remains, but Honda electrifies all-wheel drive
The most interesting aspect, however, is not the body size. In its 2026 business strategy, Honda confirmed that it will bring new D-segment or larger hybrid models to North America in 2029. For them, the company is developing an entirely new powertrain that combines a new V6 petrol engine with electric drive motors and a new battery.
Honda promises strong pulling power and good towing capability. This is critical in North America, where a large SUV must carry not only a family but also tow a boat, caravan or other heavy load.
Honda’s next-generation hybrid technology will also include electric all-wheel drive. Instead of a conventional propshaft, the rear axle can be driven by an electric motor. The manufacturer aims to improve fuel economy by more than 10 per cent with the new platform and hybrid system, while reducing hybrid technology costs by more than 30 per cent compared with 2023 systems.
Honda returns to hybrids rather than electric vehicles
The new giant fits Honda’s changed strategy. In 2026, the company cancelled three electric vehicles planned for North America, including the Honda 0 SUV and 0 Saloon, and is directing more money towards hybrids.
Honda plans to launch 15 next-generation hybrid models by spring 2030, a large share of them in North America. The new platform and hybrid system will reach the first vehicles as early as 2027.
Europe should not expect such a giant. The roughly 5.3-metre V6 hybrid is clearly designed around North American needs, while Honda’s European model range is instead moving towards more compact hybrids with smaller-displacement engines.
