Volkswagen Introduces New Plug-in Hybrid Version of Golf: A Blend of Innovation and Efficiency
Volkswagen has unveiled a new version of the iconic Golf, now available for the first time as a plug-in hybrid. This new model is set to revolutionize urban mobility with its electric range of approximately 100 km and a total driving range of up to 1000 kilometers. Enhancing the driving experience, the new Golf features IDA voice assistant, integrated with ChatGPT technology, marking a significant step forward in smart vehicle interaction.
This model also debuts a new design element for the brand – an illuminated Volkswagen logo on the front, symbolizing the company’s commitment to innovation. The new Golf is expected to hit the Estonian market by summer, following its pre-sale launch in early February.
In Europe, the updated Golf will be available with nine different powertrains, including mild hybrids (eTSI), plug-in hybrids (eHybrid and GTE), turbocharged petrol (TSI), and turbocharged diesel engines (TDI). Both mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids utilize a combination of internal combustion and electric motors. Mild hybrids do not require external charging, relying on a battery to assist the engine, whereas plug-in hybrids can be charged externally, offering the option of driving solely on electric power. The new plug-in hybrids feature rapid DC charging capabilities, allowing for an all-electric range of about 100 km. Notably, the Golf GTI’s turbocharged engine has been enhanced to produce 195 kW (265 hp), a 15 kW increase, and the 2.0 TSI engine now generates 150 kW (204 hp) with an additional 10 kW boost.
The Golf boasts a newly developed intuitive infotainment system (MIB4) with a standalone touchscreen. The system’s new graphics and menu structure simplify user interaction. Available in two 16:9 screen sizes, the base version’s Ready 2 Discover touchscreen measures 26.4 cm (10.4 inches), while the Discover version extends to 32.8 cm (12.9 inches). Optional features for both Golf and Golf Variant include a head-up display.
Incorporating Cerence Chat Pro’s ChatGPT integration, the new IDA voice assistant in the evolving Golf offers capabilities far beyond traditional voice control. The assistant effortlessly spans a vast online information realm, from dynamic weather forecasts to a wide array of general knowledge, although it is available only in selected languages.
The standard equipment in the new Golf includes automatic climate control (Climatronic), an enhanced multifunction steering wheel, keyless entry and start system (Keyless Access), traffic sign recognition, cruise control, front and rear parking aids, the new infotainment system (base version), wireless App-Connect for smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a mobile phone interface, Digital Cockpit Pro with a 26 cm (10.2 inches) screen, and new LED front and rear lights.
The new Golf and Golf Variant stand out with a redesigned front. Among the visually distinctive features in European markets are the illuminated Volkswagen logo and newly developed LED headlights. The IQ.LIGHT LED matrix high beams extend up to 500 meters.
Enhanced Park Assist Plus and Park Assist Pro simplify maneuvering for Golf and Golf Variant, facilitating parking space entry and exit via smartphone, along with a new 360-degree camera view.
The Golf and Golf Variant will be available in base configuration as well as higher trim packages including Life, Style, and R-Line, encompassing a wide range of equipment and powertrains. The Golf GTE and Golf GTI will be positioned independently. The Golf GTI Clubsport, Golf R, and Golf Variant R, featuring 4MOTION all-wheel drive, will be added in the second half of the year.
