McLaren to launch new 603 kW McL 820 supercar next year
McLaren’s next series-production supercar will be called the McL 820 and will be unveiled in 2027. The new designation links the brand’s racing heritage with an output of 820 PS, or approximately 603 kW, and ushers in a more consistent model-naming system.
The name reveals the power output, but technical details remain under wraps
According to McLaren Automotive, the new naming system combines the motorsport-inspired McL prefix with a number denoting performance. In the case of the McL 820, the number directly represents the car’s output of 820 PS, rather than simply its position in the model range.
That equates to a rounded 603 kW. The manufacturer is not yet disclosing the powertrain configuration, torque, weight or acceleration figures. There is therefore no basis yet for assessing how the new car will perform against its predecessors or rivals. Power output provides one important reference point, but weight, aerodynamics and the drivetrain also shape the overall picture.

A more consistent naming approach for road and race cars
The new naming system aims to make McLaren’s model designations clearer and more consistent, bringing a more unified approach to the cars of McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing. The McL 820 therefore represents not just a new car, but also a change in how the brand presents its products.
To mark the announcement, McLaren brought a kiwi bird sculpture to central London, with camouflage bearing the new model’s name. The kiwi symbol, introduced by Bruce McLaren, connects the new designation to the brand’s early days. For now, the public presentation says more about the name and heritage than the car’s engineering.
European buyers must wait for details
McLaren promises more information in 2027. The announcement does not specify a timetable for the European market launch, when orders will open or a price. Figures for fuel consumption, emissions and any electric driving range are also absent.
For now, it is worth distinguishing the model’s announcement from the start of sales: the manufacturer gives 2027 as the year of arrival, but provides no date for the first customer deliveries. A meaningful assessment of where the new supercar stands technically will only be possible once further details become available.
