DS Automobiles unveiled the 4.19-metre-long F3VER electric concept at the Paris Motor Show, offering the first credible indication of how the next-generation DS 3 will look. The French luxury brand is preparing to move away from a small SUV body style and return to a lower, sportier hatchback. The new model is expected to reach the European market in late 2028 and cost around €30,000.

DS 3 returns to its roots

The DS F3VER is more than just a flight of fancy for its designers. The concept measures 4190 mm long, 1840 mm wide and 1460 mm high. Its 2700 mm wheelbase allows for a spacious cabin within compact exterior dimensions.

The boot is sizeable, too. It has a capacity of 400 litres, 50 litres more than the current DS 3.

The F3VER marks a new design direction for the brand, centred on individuality, efficient use of space and simpler construction.

Instead of a traditional front grille, DS uses a vertical black panel with the brand's emblem at its centre. This is complemented by Y-shaped LED headlights. At the rear, 16 LED panels create a three-dimensional lighting effect, supported by a lightweight magnesium structure.

Colour choices become an important part of the design

One of the F3VER's most striking features is its Cosmic Blue paintwork, which shifts from blue to violet depending on the angle of the light.

DS also offers the option of a multicoloured body. The decorative strip surrounding the roof, the rear wings and the rear end can each receive a separate finish. This approach recalls the extensive personalisation options available on the first-generation DS 3.

The manufacturer's new “Design Intelligence” principle focuses on reducing the number of parts, making the structure lighter and improving aerodynamics. For example, DS combines the headlights and daytime running lights in a single housing and dispenses with additional plastic wheel-arch cladding.

Simpler construction helps reduce production costs while retaining the finish expected of a luxury car.

New electric DS 3 could arrive in 2028

According to French motoring magazine L'Argus, a production model based on the F3VER's design is likely to reach the market under the DS N°3 name in late 2028. Its price is forecast to be around €30,000.

The new model is expected to share its platform with the next-generation Peugeot E-208. This would allow Stellantis to share development costs across several car brands.

DS has not yet disclosed the F3VER's electric motor output, battery capacity or a specific range figure. However, the manufacturer promises a range among the best in its class.

The concept's 21-inch wheels and particularly low ground clearance are likely to remain features of the show car. The production version will need to strike a more practical balance between ride comfort, energy consumption and production cost.

DS needs to make its mark again in Europe's luxury small-car market

The original DS 3 achieved considerable success in the European market, but its replacement, the DS 3 Crossback, failed to match its predecessor's popularity.

A return to a low-slung hatchback could help the brand regain its distinctive character. The future electric DS N°3 would compete with MINI and other higher-priced small electric cars, among others.

At around €30,000, DS will need to offer more than striking looks. Buyers expect a decent range, a high-quality cabin and convincing ride comfort.

The F3VER's most important message is not its futuristic lighting technology, but DS's desire to move away from yet another small SUV. If the French brand can combine the character of the first DS 3 with modern electric technology, its smallest model could once again become a serious contender.
