Fiat TRIS gets doors and can carry the equivalent of two Euro pallets

Fiat Professional has unveiled a new version of its electric three-wheeled TRIS at IAA Transportation in Hannover. At first glance, the small urban logistics vehicle’s key update may seem fairly basic: the cab has gained doors. Developed in response to customer feedback, the solution improves weather protection, safety and comfort for the driver.
Three wheels and 3.17 metres
The TRIS is Fiat Professional’s first fully electric three-wheeled vehicle. It is not intended to replace the Doblò or Ducato, but to handle last-mile deliveries in places where a conventional van is simply unnecessarily large.
The vehicle is just 3.17 metres long and has a turning radius of 3.05 metres. Depending on configuration and homologation, the European version has a payload of up to 430 kilograms. The Cargo Box can accommodate two Euro pallets.
Fiat offers the TRIS in several configurations, including a box-body version, Cargo, chassis cab and Flat Bed. In Hannover, the manufacturer is showing the new door-equipped Cargo Box and a doorless box-body variant.
A 6.9 kWh battery is enough for 90 kilometres
The TRIS uses a 6.9 kWh battery, with a homologated WMTC range of up to 90 kilometres. No wallbox is needed for charging, as the vehicle can be plugged into a standard 220 V socket.
According to information released at its earlier European presentation, charging from 0 to 80 per cent takes around 3.5 hours, while a full charge takes 4 hours and 40 minutes. Regenerative braking helps recover energy in urban driving.
Ninety kilometres may seem ridiculously little by passenger-car standards, but the TRIS is not a passenger car. For an urban courier, service company or small business, the low price, easy charging, compact dimensions and ability to carry a substantial amount of cargo through streets that are not well suited to vans matter more.
