Hyundai has unveiled the Monochrome special edition of its sporty Elantra N, replacing the conspicuous red design elements with a more understated look. Black details, forged wheels and carbon-fibre aerodynamic additions give the saloon a more refined appearance while retaining its sporting character.

According to the manufacturer's press release, the Elantra N Monochrome was developed in response to customers who wanted a powerful sports saloon that did not advertise its capabilities at every turn. The new design emphasises the body's proportions and materials without abandoning the N models' racing heritage.

Fewer colours, more carbon fibre

The Monochrome is distinguished by its body-coloured details, redesigned bumpers, side skirts and rear diffuser. The brake callipers and standard forged wheels also receive their own distinctive designs.

Two exterior colours are available: Abyss Black Pearl and Performance Blue. The former makes the car almost entirely black, while the latter combines Hyundai N's signature blue with understated dark details.

Hyundai offers two trim levels. The base version features black detailing and an Alcantara-trimmed interior, while the more expensive Upper Trim adds a carbon-fibre rear wing and mirror housings. The Alcantara-covered steering wheel has black controls.

Familiar technology remains

Hyundai has not announced any powertrain changes for the Monochrome. The standard Elantra N has a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing approximately 206 kW and 392 Nm. Depending on the market, the manufacturer offers the front-wheel-drive model with a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The special edition therefore focuses on appearance rather than additional kilowatts. Compared with the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Honda Civic Type R, the Elantra N is one of the few sporty saloons that still offers a traditional turbocharged engine and an authentic driving experience.

Europe left out for now

The Elantra N Monochrome will initially launch in South Korea, Canada and Australia. Sales in its home market begin in late October, with Hyundai planning to extend availability to other markets later. The manufacturer has not yet confirmed European sales or pricing.

For European car enthusiasts, the Monochrome therefore remains more of a tempting prospect to admire from afar. In Europe, Hyundai N is increasingly focusing on electric performance models, while the traditional petrol-powered Elantra N lives on elsewhere in the world.

The Monochrome shows that a sports car does not necessarily need bright colours and aggressive design elements. Hyundai has recognised that some buyers prefer a fast car whose true capabilities only become apparent when they press the accelerator.
