Segway’s new direction in electric motorcycles combines everyday riding, off-road use and high-performance concepts. The most concrete news for Europe is the X cruiser, with production and launch planned for 2027–2028. Meanwhile, the Orca Concept demonstrates the company’s technological ambitions with an 800 V architecture and a target of accelerating to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

X cruiser is the key model for Europe

Segway is presenting three model directions at the EICMA show in Milan: the Orca Concept, the off-road and rally-focused X-series, and the X cruiser for everyday riding. Their stages of development differ considerably: the X cruiser has a confirmed series-production plan, while production and sales of the other vehicles presented await further announcements.

The European version of the X cruiser will offer 4.5 kW AC charging through a Type 2 connection. The more powerful DC fast charging planned for the Chinese version will be optional there; no equivalent commitment has been made for Europe.

The manufacturer quotes a range of nearly 200 km, but the material does not specify the test cycle used. European prices, a country-by-country sales schedule and final local specifications are also missing. The presentation therefore establishes a clear market direction, but the information needed to make a purchase decision is not yet complete.

  • X cruiser: the production and launch plan for China and Europe covers 2027–2028; final specifications will depend on the market.

  • European X cruiser: 4.5 kW Type 2 AC charging and a manufacturer-quoted range of nearly 200 km, with no test cycle specified in the material.

  • X cruiser equipment: BSD, LCW and a 10.25-inch TFT display as standard; an electrically opening 55-litre luggage box as an option.

  • Orca Concept: 800 V architecture, 650 V nominal voltage and a battery of nearly 20 kWh; targets are a 300 km range, 0–100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and 200 km of range added in a 20-minute charge.

  • X-series: the manufacturer names the Xaber 300 DS for Europe, but its on-sale date and final specifications have not been confirmed.

X cruiser borrows protection ideas from cars

The X cruiser’s most distinctive feature concerns rider protection. Its structure uses safety-cage and half-cage designs, collision protection from four directions, progressive energy absorption and seat belts to restrain the rider. These describe the design objectives, rather than proving crash safety equivalent to that of a passenger car.

BSD blind-spot monitoring and LCW lane-change warning are standard. The CTB design integrates the battery into the body structure to improve rigidity and make better use of the space available for the battery.

The X cruiser uses a 15-inch front wheel and a 14-inch rear wheel, with Michelin City Grip tyres. A 10.25-inch TFT display is standard, while an electrically opening 55-litre luggage box is optional. The model also uses two-wheeler intellectual property and technical know-how licensed from BMW Group, although the material does not identify specific components.

Orca Concept targets a 300 km range

The Orca Concept explores the possibilities of a high-performance electric maxi-scooter. Its 800 V architecture has a nominal voltage of 650 V, and its battery capacity is nearly 20 kWh. Design targets include a 300 km range, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and adding 200 km of range in a 20-minute charge.

The important distinction is between a target and a confirmed result: Orca is a concept project, not a finished production model. Range, acceleration and charging performance depend on testing, operating and charging conditions. The project supports both AC and DC charging, as well as supplying power to external devices.

The front and rear multi-link suspension systems are intended to reduce dive under braking and separate steering and suspension functions. Integrating the battery into the body structure improves space utilisation and rigidity, while multi-mode CDC damping offers settings for urban, leisure and sporty riding, both solo and with a passenger.

Hardline27, founded by Sasha Selipanov, is involved in the Orca’s exterior design. There is currently no series-production schedule for the project.

X-series takes development off-road and into rallying

The X-series brings together the Xaber X1000, Xaber 350, the US-bound Xaber 300, Europe’s Xaber 300 DS and the Segway Xyber already available in the US market. However, the European model name does not confirm an on-sale date or final specifications.

Michelin will become the official technical supporter of the Segway Dakar Rally Factory Team, providing tyres and technical resources. The partnership aims to verify tyre and vehicle compatibility, durability, reliability and energy efficiency over Dakar’s long distances and varied terrain.

The three directions therefore serve different purposes: Orca tests technological limits, the X-series takes solutions into demanding conditions, and the X cruiser is intended to bring them into everyday use. For European buyers, the last of these is currently the most tangible prospect, although final market details have yet to be released.
