Volvo EX30 becomes an electric van with 1,000 litres of cargo space
Volvo has turned its smallest electric SUV into a two-seat van. The EX30 Cargo dispenses with the rear seats, offers 1,000 litres of cargo space and can carry a payload of up to 390 kg. Sold only in the UK, the model also qualifies for the country's government electric van grant, reducing the purchase price by approximately €2,960.
Cargo space replaces the rear seats
The Volvo EX30 Cargo is based on the standard EX30 electric car, but the manufacturer has replaced the rear seats with a flat load floor. A dedicated bulkhead behind the front seats separates the passenger compartment from the load.
The rear doors open wider than before to make the load area easier to access. Additional lighting improves visibility, while an underfloor frame provides extra mounting points for tools and specialist equipment.
The 1,000-litre load area is particularly suited to service technicians, couriers and businesses transporting smaller consignments. However, the 390 kg payload capacity limits its ability to carry heavier goods.
Volvo also offers an EX30 Cross Country Cargo version with greater ground clearance, making it better suited to roads with poor surfaces.
A choice of two electric motors
Volvo offers the EX30 Cargo with two powertrains. The entry-level P3 version develops approximately 110 kW, while the more powerful P5 produces 200 kW.
The Core, Plus and Cross Country Plus trim levels offer a choice of comfort and technology features.
Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, a reversing camera, LED headlights, a heat pump and an infotainment system with Google services.
Volvo's UK division carries out the Cargo conversion. The manufacturer can convert both newly ordered vehicles and EX30 electric cars from the 2026 and 2027 model years held in stock.
A small van for buyers in a higher price bracket
In the European market, the EX30 Cargo would primarily compete with compact electric vans such as the Renault Kangoo E-Tech, Citroën ë-Berlingo and Peugeot E-Partner.
The Volvo offers a more car-like driving environment and more luxurious equipment than these models, but falls short of purpose-built cargo vehicles in practicality.
For example, depending on the version, the Renault Kangoo E-Tech can accommodate several times as much cargo and offers a higher payload capacity.
The EX30 Cargo therefore suits a business that needs a compact electric work vehicle but values driving comfort and generous equipment over a large load area.
