Toyota Sequoia gains Trailhunter off-road package and smarter towing aids
The 2027 Toyota Sequoia combines a 326 kW hybrid powertrain with a new Trailhunter off-road package and more comprehensive towing aids. The update to the large three-row SUV also brings adjustable FOX dampers to the TRD Pro version and a 14-inch touchscreen across the range.
Two different approaches to off-road driving
Toyota is adding a Trailhunter package to the Sequoia SR5 trim in the US for the first time. It brings together upgraded Old Man Emu suspension, underbody protection, front recovery hooks and Michelin LTX Trail tyres. Bronze-coloured wheels and badges distinguish its exterior.
Standard Trailhunter equipment also includes Crawl Control for low-speed off-road driving, the Multi-Terrain Select drive mode system and a locking rear differential. The package is therefore not simply focused on adventurous looks: its suspension, protection and traction management amount to a proper off-road setup.
The TRD Pro takes a different approach. Its main update is adjustable FOX QS3 dampers developed specifically for the Sequoia, allowing damping to be adapted to different driving conditions. Standard red tow hooks and a new Honeycomb exterior colour option are also added. The source does not specify suspension travel or ground clearance for either version, leaving a precise comparison of their off-road capabilities open.
Powertrain: 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 and electric motor-generator, with a combined output of approximately 326 kW and 790 Nm of torque.
Highest published towing capacity: approximately 4,318 kg according to US-market figures; version-specific figures are not available.
Trailhunter: Old Man Emu suspension, underbody protection, front recovery hooks, Michelin LTX Trail tyres and a locking rear differential.
TRD Pro: adjustable FOX QS3 dampers tailored to the Sequoia and standard red tow hooks.
Standard equipment: 14-inch multimedia screen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0.
326 kW hybrid powertrain and towing capacity of up to 4,318 kg
All 2027 Sequoias use the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, which combines a 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine with an electric motor-generator. Combined output reaches approximately 326 kW, with torque of 790 Nm.
The manufacturer's published maximum towing capacity is a rounded 4,318 kg. This is the maximum across the range, not confirmation of the towing capacity of every trim level. The press materials provide neither version-specific towing capacities nor fuel consumption figures.
The towing updates extend beyond power figures. A new suite of driver assistance features uses rear radar and a camera to detect a trailer automatically and estimate its dimensions. The system transfers the data to the Trailer Garage menu, which moves from the instrument cluster to the multimedia screen.
More assistance when reversing with a trailer
Trailer blind-spot monitoring extends its detection area according to the size of the trailer. Lane centring assistance adapted for towing supports steering under certain conditions and helps account for uneven road surfaces and some wind disturbances.
The enhanced Trailer Backup Guide adds dynamic guidelines on the screen, a slider-based interface and semi-automatic steering assistance for more complex reversing manoeuvres. The system also helps detect the risk of the vehicle and trailer jackknifing. These functions assist the driver rather than make the vehicle and trailer self-driving.
More shared digital features across the range
The Sequoia gains a standard 14-inch multimedia screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster on every trim level. The new multimedia system offers a customisable home screen and a permanently accessible quick-access menu.
A standard dashcam function uses the vehicle's exterior cameras to record 20-second video clips. Recordings can be viewed directly on the touchscreen. The digital key works with a compatible smart device's digital wallet, but requires a Remote Connect trial or subscription.
The Arene software platform developed by Woven by Toyota supports over-the-air software updates, among other functions. The three-row cabin retains its sliding third-row seats and adjustable luggage compartment shelf system, allowing space to be allocated between passengers and luggage.
Radar also monitors the rear seats
Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard. Its features include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assistance, lane centring assistance, road sign recognition and automatic high beams.
A new rear-seat reminder system uses millimetre-wave radar positioned behind the headlining. Under certain conditions, it can detect movement in the second or third row after the vehicle has been parked, the ignition switched off and the driver has left, triggering escalating audible and visual warnings. Remote notifications require an active Safety Connect service and a 5G network.
US pricing announced, European plans unknown
On the exterior, Toyota is revising the Sequoia's front end, lower bumper and trim-specific grilles with hexagonal motifs, and adding rectangular fog lights.
The published recommended price in the US starts at $69,900, and the manufacturer expects the vehicle to reach dealerships in autumn 2026. The source does not address European sales plans, pricing in euros or European type approval. Nor should the towing capacity published for the US be taken as a promise of the figures that would appear in European registration documents.
