Electric Mercedes G-Class goes further on the same battery
1/29
Mercedes-Benz has made the electric G 580 more efficient without increasing its battery capacity. The 2027 model’s EPA range rises from 385 kilometres to 401 kilometres, while its 10–80 per cent fast-charging time drops by three minutes. For now, however, the changes apply only to the US market.
Same battery, better efficiency
The G 580 with EQ Technology retains its battery with 116 kWh of usable capacity and its four-motor powertrain. The system produces 432 kW and 1164 Nm. Each wheel is driven by a separate motor paired with a two-speed transmission.
The key change is in energy use. Range on the US EPA cycle increases from 385 kilometres to 401 kilometres, despite unchanged battery capacity. The EPA efficiency rating improves from 62 MPGe to 71 MPGe.
The European G 580 currently has an official WLTP range of 473 kilometres and energy consumption of 27.7–30.3 kWh/100 km. Mercedes-Benz has not yet confirmed whether the efficiency improvements for the US model will also reach the European version.
Faster charging without higher peak power
Peak DC charging power remains at 200 kW, but the 10–80 per cent charging time falls from 32 minutes to 29 minutes. This points to an improved charging curve and optimised control rather than the addition of more powerful hardware.
The US model also gains a NACS connector, allowing it to use Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. A separate J1772 socket remains for AC charging.
Still technically outrageous, but inefficient
With a weight of more than three tonnes, a ladder frame and a boxy body, the electric G-Class remains energy-hungry by electric car standards. That is precisely why a 16-kilometre range increase with the same battery is far more interesting technically than the number itself.
In Europe, the G 580 competes less on the efficiency of conventional electric luxury SUVs and more on its unique four-motor off-road capability. If the same improvements reach Europe, its WLTP figure could also improve somewhat.
