Honda has updated the Civic Type R for the 2027 model year, focusing on cooling, aerodynamics and handling rather than increasing power. The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine still produces 235 kW and 420 Nm, with power sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. The updated model will not officially reach European buyers, as Type R sales in the region end in 2026.

Larger air intake and more downforce

Honda has redesigned the Type R's front end. A larger air intake improves engine cooling, while a deeper splitter increases downforce. According to the manufacturer, engineers also reduced airflow turbulence to maintain more stable temperatures under heavy load.

Honda has left the engine unchanged. The 1996 cm³ turbocharged four-cylinder produces 235 kW at 6500 rpm and 420 Nm between 2600 and 4000 rpm. A six-speed manual remains the only gearbox available, while a helical mechanical limited-slip differential helps put the power down.

Retuned suspension in +R mode

Honda has revised the adaptive suspension's damper settings in +R mode. The aim was to reduce body bounce and harshness, helping the tyres maintain better contact with uneven road surfaces.

The Rev Match system also responds faster on downshifts. A spring has been added to the brake pedal to reduce play in the mechanism, which should give the pedal a more direct feel.

These changes are consistent with the Type R's existing approach. In a front-wheel-drive car with 235 kW, the limiting factor is no longer engine power, but how precisely the available performance can be used under braking, on corner entry and on corner exit.

A more comfortable cabin for everyday driving

The 2027 model year brings heated front seats to the Type R for the first time. The dashboard and upper door sections gain Ultrasuede trim, alongside two USB-C ports and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. The US version also gets integrated Google services and the Gemini assistant.

These additions do not change the car's character, but they make the Type R more usable as an everyday car.

Europe misses out on the update

Honda will end European sales of the Civic Type R in 2026. The model's departure from the region is marked by the Ultimate Edition, limited to 40 cars, which Honda unveiled in 2025. Based on the information currently available, the 2027 model-year update will therefore be confined to the North American market.

From a European perspective, this makes the Type R's departure particularly regrettable. Rivals are moving towards all-wheel drive, automatic gearboxes and ever-higher power outputs, while Honda continues with a lighter-weight formula: front-wheel drive, a manual gearbox and chassis tuning that is as precise as possible.
