Škoda has expanded the line-up of its most affordable electric SUV with the sportier Epiq Sportline. The new version offers up to 155 kW of power, a range of 440 kilometres and more extensive equipment. Despite its sporty name, it is not a separate performance model: its hardware remains the same as that of other Epiq versions.

Sporty styling and more equipment

The Epiq Sportline is distinguished by gloss-black exterior trim, black roof rails and specially designed bumpers. A black roof is offered exclusively on the Sportline.

Black 19-inch alloy wheels come as standard, with 20-inch wheels available at extra cost. An illuminated grille and T-shaped matrix LED headlights define the front end. Inside are electrically adjustable sports seats upholstered in Suedia, a black headlining and stainless-steel pedal covers. The heated, three-spoke sports steering wheel has paddles that allow the driver to adjust the level of regenerative braking.

The Sportline also has the most comprehensive standard equipment of any Epiq version. Alongside dual-zone climate control, heated seats and a digital car key, Škoda offers wireless phone charging. Options include a 360-degree camera system, a ten-speaker Canton sound system and automatic parking assistance.

Two powertrains and up to 440 kilometres

The Epiq Sportline will go on sale with two powertrains. The more affordable Epiq 40 develops 99 kW and 267 Nm. Its 38.5 kWh battery has a usable capacity of 37 kWh, and its initial range estimate exceeds 310 kilometres. Fast charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes 23 minutes. The more powerful Epiq 55 offers 155 kW and 290 Nm. Its 55 kWh battery has a usable capacity of 52 kWh, allowing it to travel up to 440 kilometres. It accelerates from rest to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds, while charging the battery from 10 to 80 per cent takes 24 minutes in favourable conditions.

Both versions have a top speed of 160 km/h. The Sportline does not get a more powerful motor or a dedicated sports chassis set-up — at least, Škoda has not announced any such changes.

Competition among European electric cars intensifies

The Epiq sits in Europe's affordable electric SUV segment, where the Renault 4 E-Tech and Ford Puma Gen-E are set to become its direct rivals. Both offer practical, compact bodies and are primarily suited to city driving and everyday commuting. Škoda's strengths are the more powerful Epiq's 440-kilometre range and fast charging. These make the small electric car usable for longer trips too, although its actual range depends on temperature and driving speed.

The Sportline's success will largely depend on its price, which the manufacturer has yet to announce. As it is the best-equipped version in the model family, the price difference compared with the standard Epiq could be substantial. With the Epiq Sportline, it is worth noting that Škoda is primarily selling sporty styling and additional equipment, rather than greater performance. That is not necessarily a drawback, as 155 kW already provides entirely adequate performance in a small electric SUV.
